10,000 Hours” is a collaboration between country music duo Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber. It was released on October 4, 2019.

Background[]

Shay Mooney commented that they had known Justin for a while. And since they shared the same manager and didn't have any hits, they tried to get to Justin. Since the song reminded him of Bieber's old works. "We kind of just shot our shot thinking what's the worst that he can do is say no. We shot over an email to him and was 'hey man you know we love this song and we'd love to you know love for you to be a part of it'. And we got a response back and like immediately and he loved the song and wanted to jump on it".[1]

Justin Bieber reached out to Poo Bear and said, “Hey, I got this record that Dan + Shay did – I want you to flip it. What would you do?” Poo Bear went in and worked on the record, and re-recorded some things and changed a couple things. The record was mostly done—it was just getting Justin’s part and making sure it sounded normal and not forced or contrived. They did the record and send it to Justin, and he loved it. Then he cut it and it came out.[2]

Co-writer Jessie Jo Dillon was in New York when Dan and Shay told her that Justin Bieber was on the song. "'Hey, we gotta go back to my hotel, I wanna play something'"..."I'm assuming at this point though, I'm like, oh maybe they cut 10,000 Hours, oh my gosh."..."Dan said, 'guess who's on 10,000 hours with us?', I was like 'who', and he said, 'Justin Bieber'. And I was like, shut up. That is ridiculous."... "For real though, I wanna hear it". And he 'no, he's really on the song'. I was like, 'Stop, dude no'. I didn't not believe him. And finally he just put headphones on my head, it already sounded so great from the top. I was like tearing up and then when he (Justin) started singing, I mean I just cried. I mean there's like a video of it. Where we're all freaking out. But it is like one of my favorite memories. I still can't believe it really sometimes.[3]

TMZ broke the news of the collaboration as the song was played on Justin Bieber's wedding.[4]

Composition and lyrical interpretation[]

Dan, Shay, Jordan Reynolds and Jessie Jo Dillon wrote the song on March 19, 2019 on Reynold's house in Nashville.[5] Dan Smyers came up with the idea for the song. Inspired by the book that says it takes 10,000 hours to fully learn something. They tried to apply that to love.[1]

When the lyrics say "did you get your middle name from your grandma?", it could be a reference to Hailey Bieber's middle name; "Rhode".

"Rhode is my middle name, it's my mother's middle name and I believe it's also her grandmother's middle name so it is a name passed down." -Hailey on the Gloss Angeles podcast on July, 2022

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Dan + Shay]
Do you love the rain, does it make you dance
When you're drunk with your friends at a party
What's your favorite song, does it make you smile?
Do you think of me?

[Pre-Chorus: Dan + Shay]
When you close your eyes tell me what are you dreamin'
Everything I wanna know it all

[Chorus: Dan + Shay]
I'd spend 10,000 hours and 10,000 more
Oh, if that's what it takes to learn that sweetheart of yours
And I might never get there, but I'm gonna try
If it's 10,000 hours or the rest of my life
I'm gonna love you, (Ooh)

[Verse 2: Justin Bieber]
Do you miss the road that you grew up on?
Did you get your middle name from your grandma?
When you think about your forever now do you think of me?

[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber]
When you close you eyes tell me what arre you dreamin'
Everything I wanna know it all

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
I'd spend 10,000 hours and 10,000 more
Oh, if that's what it takes to learn that sweetheart of yours
And I might never get there, but I'm gonna try
If it's 10,000 hours or the rest of my life
I'm gonna love you (Ooh)
I'm gonna love you (Ooh)

[Bridge: Justin Bieber]
Ooh, want the good and the bad and everything in between
Ooh, gotta cure my curiosity
Ooh yeah

[Chorus: Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber]

If it's 10,000 hours or the rest of my life
