In August 2013, Ariana opened for Justin on his Believe Tour. During this time, Ariana brought her grandparents to see Justin since her Nonna had always wanted to meet him. While on tour, the hashtag #JustinAndArianaSelfie trended on Twitter so they took a picture together. Justin then made Ariana post the picture on Twitter which caused a lot of rumors to start about them dating. Ariana quickly denied the rumors and stated in an interview she never wanted to post the picture in the first place because she knew it would bring drama. "It’s funny — everybody thinks we spent so much time together because we were touring, but really, I think I saw him once, and it was for about five minutes," Ariana said. "He played me ‘Heartbreaker,' it was amazing, and then I left. It’s like ‘hey, great job, bye.'" Ariana admitted that with both of them performing, it's impossible to be together at the same time. "You don't really see each other, cause it's like I'm on stage, then I'm off stage, and then I leave and I go to sleep. And then he's on stage then he leaves," Ariana said. "So it’s like you don't see each other."

A month later, Ariana Grande revealed during an interview with M Magazine that she freaked out when Justin Bieber texted her. She said: “Justin’s the most famous contact I have in my phone. I felt so cool when he texted me. I didn’t believe it was him at first. He wrote, ‘What’s up cutie?’ and I dropped my phone and thought, ‘That did not just happen.’”

In an interview with Boston radio station Mix 104.1, Ariana talked about Justin's January 2014 arrest “I think it’s really serious. I’ve seen tweets of people making fun of the mugshot and all this stuff, and it’s so ignorant,” said Grande. “I just want him to be okay, that’s all. I just think it’s a serious thing. And I don’t think it’s something to make fun of anymore. I don’t think it’s funny anymore. I mean you could throw an egg at a house. Who the hell cares. Just shut up. That was annoying – don’t search somebody’s house,” Grande continued. “But it’s just the health part that is concerning to me, because he’s a great person and a very talented boy, and I want the best for him, so I just hope that he’s okay. He’s the most visible and yet isolated human being I’ve ever met.”

In May 2014, Ariana and Justin confirmed that they had recorded a song together. A couple of weeks later, though, Ariana revealed the song was done too late to make it on her album. She said they might just release the song for free as a thank-you to their fans. Later that year, Ariana said that she and Justin had never actually finished recording the song. However, she says they will finish the song one day and release it because they owe it to their fans.

On March 28, 2015, Justin joined Ariana on stage during her Honeymoon Tour in Miami Florida. They sang Justin's songs "As Long As You Love Me" (Ariana rapped Big Sean's verse) and "All That Matters." Justin also sang Ariana's song "Love Me Harder" with her on stage.

In April 2019, during the Coachella Vally Music and Arts Festival weekend two, Ariana brought Justin out to sing his single "Sorry". During his interview on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe, Justin opened up about the fear he had about returning to music and how Ariana helped him in his process. “I was dealing with a lot of fear, a lot of just… was afraid of, at that point, just even the process,” Justin shared. “I think when I went on stage with Ariana Grande, I seen the reaction of how people reacted when I went on the stage. It was like, ‘Okay.’ She gave me kind of a boost of confidence and reminded me because it’d been so long since I’d been on stage. Just kind of reminded me what… Oh, this is what I do. This is what I’m good at. And I don’t need to run away from it.”
