“Cold Water” is a song by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber & MØ. It was first heard in a club in New York in May 2016.
Background[]
Jamie Scott was in New York hanging out with Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran came past in the evening, they sat down and wrote this song. It came about really quickly and then they just moved on.[1]
Ed Sheeran revealed to 97.1 AMP Radio that he has no recollection of ever writing "Cold Water." "It was a song I must've half-written somewhere at a time where I was writing a lot of songs." About a year later Diplo heard it and send an email. 'Yo! That 'Cold Water' song is dope! Can I have it?' Ed Sheeran was like 'I don't know what you're talking about.'" And then he emailed and was like, “Yo, Justin [Bieber] wants to hop on the ‘Cold Water’ song. Is that cool?’[2]
The day before Diplo arrived in New York, he was more than a little surprised when Bieber tweeted about the track, asking when it would be coming out. “That was not planned at all,” said Diplo. “I was like, ‘F–, I have to tweet back now.’ The song isn’t really done, but he’s excited. It’s actually very real. Twitter is the only reason I know he’s excited about the song. I don’t have his number, so he Twitters at me.”[3]
During a chat on BBC Sounds’ Sidetracked with Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac, Sam Smith opened up about being offered the track and having to turn the opportunity down. “The only time I got sent a song that I heard and then became a well-known song was ‘Cold Water’ by Major Lazer with Justin Bieber. They sent me that to sing and at the time I was so busy and couldn’t do it and we passed on it – but I’m happy I passed on it because Justin Bieber did it way better than what I would have done. It was made for him.”[4]

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1: Justin Bieber]
Everybody gets high sometimes, you know
What else can we do when we're feelin' low?
So take a deep breath and let it go
You shouldn't be drowning on your own
[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber]
And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over
Into cold, cold water for you
And although time may take us into different places
I will still be patient with you
And I hope you know
[Chorus: Justin Bieber, Justin Bieber & MØ]
I won't let go
I'll be your lifeline tonight
I won't let go
I'll be your lifeline tonight
[Verse 2: Justin Bieber]
'Cause we all get lost sometimes, you know?
It's how we learn and how we grow
And I wanna lay with you 'til I'm old, o-old
You shouldn't be fighting on your own
[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber]
And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over
Into cold, cold water for you
And although time may take us into different places
I will still be patient with you
And I hope you know
You might also like
[Chorus: Justin Bieber & MØ, Justin Bieber, MØ]
I won't let go (And I won't let go, no-no, no-no, no, I won't)
I'll be your lifeline tonight
I won't let go
I'll be your lifeline tonight (I won't let, yeah, yeah)
[Bridge: MØ]
Come on, come on, save me from my rocking boat
I just wanna stay afloat, I'm all alone (Float, float, float, float)
And I hope, I hope someone's gonna take me home
Somewhere I can rest my soul (Rest my soul)
I need to know
[Chorus: MØ, Justin Bieber & Both]
You won't let go (And I won't let go, no-no, no-no, no, I won't)
I'll be your lifeline tonight
You won't let go
I'll be your lifeline tonight
[Outro: Justin Bieber]
I won't let go
I won't let go
