Def Jam Recordings is an American record label focused predominantly on hip hop, pop and urban music, owned by Universal Music Group. Founded on 1984 in New York by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons.

Tecnically Justin Bieber always was a Def Jam artist. He signs with the label in 2008. But he was under The Island Def Jam Music Group, published by Island Records (Teen Island from 2009 to 2011).
In 2014 Universal Music Group announced the separation of The Island Def Jam, his three assets "Island Records", "Def Jam Recordings" and "Mercury Records" would be separates entities. Justin become an Def Jam Recordings artist.
