Lonely” is a song by Justin Bieber and benny blanco from Justice album.

Background[]

benny blanco and FINNEAS wrote the song before quarantine and when Justin recorded it he was quarantined in Canada.[1]

FINNEAS and benny blanco originally wrote the song. Justin changed "I have everything but no one's listening" to "I've had everything".[2]

When Bieber recorded it, he broke down crying in the studio and “had to go sit down and, like, drink a tea,” recalls co-writer Blanco. “This is the most honest Justin you’re going to get.”[3] Blanco revealed that Bieber was "real nervous", and contemplated on whether to release the song. "Because he's like, 'People know me for this thing and it's like I've never been this raw.' He's raw on this song. This song brought us so much closer together. And it was just he's really opening up on this and he's super vulnerable."[4]

Rumors of the title started when Justin Bieber posted a status feeling lonely.[5] Benny Blanco then posted a screenshot of Justin's tweet "One Less _____ Girl" on his Instagram story. Bieber confirmed the title on Instagram TV, posting a video of Hailey hiking dubbed with a song named Lonely, produced by boi1da. The description read "[...] (ps @itsbennyblanco I think there's more to say though regarding lonely what do you think??).

Release[]

Benny Blanco had long talks with Justin where he questioned whether or not he should even put this song out because it's so personal.[6]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Justin Bieber]
Everybody knows my name now
But something 'bout it still feels strange
Like looking in the mirror
Tryna steady yourself and seeing somebody else
And everything is not the same now
It feels like all our lives have changed
Maybe when I'm older, it'll all calm down
But it's killing me now

[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber]
What if you had it all but nobody to call?
Maybe then you'd know me
'Cause I've heard everything
But no one's listening
And that's just fucking lonely

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
I'm so lo-o-o-onely
Lo-o-o-onely

[Verse 2: Justin Bieber]
Everybody knows my past now
Like my house was always made of glass
And maybe that's the price you pay
For the money and fame at an early age
And everybody saw me sick
And it felt like no one gave a shit
They criticized the things I did
As an idiot kid

[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber]
What if you had it all but nobody to call?
Maybe then you'd know me
'Cause I've heard everything
But no one's listening
And that's just fucking lonely

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
I'm so lo-o-o-onely
Lo-o-o-onely
I'm so lo-o-o-onely
Lo-o-o-onely

Music video[]

Originally the video was going to be Justin walking through and doing all of the stuff alone. But Scooter and Justin wanted a younger version. It was Justin's idea to cast Jacob Trembley.[1]

Jacob Tremblay plays the role as young Justin Bieber.

The video shows how depressed Justin was on tour as a kid, showing how different and sad his life was backstage, while he was putting on a show and a smile in front of people.

Young Justin goes on stage in a huge theatre, with all seats empty except one, in which older Justin sits and watches his younger self.
