The song was first announced through the singer's Instagram account on June 4, 2013, through four separate Instagram posts. A month later the instrumental of Heartbreaker released as the soundtrack for the trailer of Justin's perfume, The Key. The song was released on the 7th of October as the first of 10 songs during Justin's Music Mondays.
Background
It's a song for people going through a heartbreak - like I was when I wrote it. It means so much to me to be able to share what I was, and still am going through, with my fans. I'm very proud of this song and I hope it gives my fans some insight into my heart. - JB
