Holy” is a song by Justin Bieber featuring Chance the Rapper[2]. The first single from Justice album.

Background[]

Mr. Franks and others had a writing camp with Jon Bellion, and a couple songs came out of that. Randomly, Jon made the connection there between Justin and everyone else.[3] Jon Bellion promised he would release the song when playing it during his 2019 GSP Tour.[4]

Justin called Chance when it was the anniversary of one of their songs together. Chance thought he was calling about “I'm the One” as it was about to get close to being a diamond record. “He hit me up...and was like, ‘Yo I got this brand new song. I don't care about the old records, I wanna make another song,’ and I was like, ‘All right I'm down to make as many as you want.’”

Chance further confirmed the meaning, telling DeGeneres, “The song is about the relationship with our wives, the relationship with our faith.”[5]

The song came into the light as “Holy” was written in the source code of jbsoon.com mentions Holy as the title of the song.[6] Additionally, in the #tBt EP, the first 4 songs initials spell out HOLY and the last song is a former collaboration with Chance the Rapper.

Music video[]

The music video premiered on YouTube on September 18, 2020. Featured guests are Ryan Destiny and Wilmer Valderrama. The video was directed by Colin Tilley and is described by Justin as a movie, rather than a music video.

In the video, Justin plays the part of an oil factory worker who lives in poverty, living in a motel with his wife/girlfriend. The girl is working as a nurse in an elderly care center and is shown to have developed a friendship with one of the elders.

The factory workers are having a meeting with their boss, who announces that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the plant has to shut down and that they are now unemployed. Leaving work, Justin's car refuses to start and he has to walk all the way home. The girl also finds out her patient died overnight.

The video switches to Chance the Rapper, rapping with Justin in the background, in a dried-up greenhouse.

To make matters worse, the couple are being evicted from their motel room. They end up becoming homeless and dragging their bags along the road at night-time. Wilmer Valderrama makes his appearance, playing a soldier driving home after coming back home from deployment. He pulls over, concerned about the couple, and invites them to come over to their house for a warm meal.

After the soldier's homecoming scene, the video switches to the family and the couple praying before eating dinner and having a good time together. The video ends with the couple hugging each other.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Justin Bieber]
I hear a lot about sinners
Don't think that I'll be a saint
But I might go down to the river
'Cause the way that the sky opens up when we touch
Yeah, it's making me say

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
That the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
On God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second
'Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy

[Verse 2: Justin Bieber]
I don't do well with the drama
And, no, I can't stand it being fake
(No, no, no, no, no, no, no)
I don't believe in nirvana
But the way that we love in the night gave me life
Baby, I can't explain

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
That the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
On God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second
'Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy

[Bridge: Justin Bieber & Chance the Rapper]
They say we're too young and
The pimps and the players say, "Don't go crushin'"
Wise men say fools rush in, but I don't know (Ah-ah-ah-ah)
They say we're too young and
The pimps and the players say, "Don't go crushin'"
Wise men say fools rush in, but I don't know (Chance the Rapper)

[Verse 3: Chance the Rapper]
The first step pleases the Father
Might be the hardest to take
But when you come out of the water
I'm a believer, my heart is fleshy
Life is short with a temper like Joe Pesci
They always come and sing your praises, your name is catchy
But they don't see you how I see you, Parlay and Desi
Cross, TWeen, Tween, Hesi' hit the jet speed
When they get messy, go lefty like Lionel Messi
Let's take a trip and get the Vespas or rent a jetski
I know the spots that got the best weed, we goin' next week
I wanna honor, wanna honor you
Bride's groom, I'm my father's child
I know when the son takes the first steps, the Father's proud (Yes)
If you make it to the water, He'll part the clouds (Uh)
I know He made you a snack like Oscar Proud (Mwah)
Suffer it to be so now gotta clean it up (Ooh)
Formalize the union in communion, He can trust (Woo)
I know I ain't leavin' you like I know He ain't leavin' us (Ah)
I know we believe in God, and I know God believes in us

[Chorus: Justin Bieber]
'Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
On God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second, on God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second, on God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second
'Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so ho-ho-ho-holy
