“I'm the One” is a song by DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Quavo.

Background[]

Khaled said that he waited until he found the right song before he asked Bieber — who he has been friends with for years — to join him on a record which became “I’m the One.”[1]

DJ Khaled reached out to Poo Bear around 2017. He had a new song, and he went to Justin Bieber’s house to play it for him. He had a record done and it wasn’t “I’m the One”…it was different. It was only the guitar part that you hear in there.[2]

And Justin was like, “Yo…let’s see if Poo Bear could [rewrite it]. Other than that, I’m not really feeling it right now.” So then Khaled reached out to Poo Bear and said, “Hey, Justin asked me to hit you, to rewrite [this song].” He told Poo Bear to book a studio and he booked it. Within two hours, from the time DJ Khaled started calling him, he was in the studio at Westlake and he recorded “I’m the One,” with all of Justin’s parts. It took Poo Bear about 35 minutes to knock it out. And I turned it in and Khaled went crazy, and Justin loved it.[3]

Recording engineer Ayo Juan said he spent a lot of time on “I’m the One.” For that, I flew to Atlanta and ended up staying with Quavo for a few days in his house (laughs). So, I was hanging with him. He was the first verse we got. Then, Bieber sent his verse in with the hook. We got Chance the Rapper last.[4]
