“I Don't Care” is a collaboration duet by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.

Background[]

The Ed Sheeran record ‘I Don’t Care” was done and then Ed's wife Cherry came up with the idea of adding Justin to the song.[1] Scooter Braun reached out to Poo Bear and said, “Hey man, go in with Max Martin and Ed Sheeran, and work on Justin’s part. Poo Bear went to Max Martin’s place in West Hollywood. Ed was there, and they worked on “I Don’t Care” and got the record and they did all the parts. Poo Bear sang background on the whole record. He thought he was just doing demos for Justin, but Ed kept his vocals on there.[2]

Rumors of the collaboration with Ed Sheeran started when he posted a similar picture as Justin Bieber of him standing in front of a green screen.[3]

Promotion for the song started on May 1st, with the artists posting pictures of themselves with the caption "ten". This was the start of the countdown of 10 days, with the song being released on May 10th.

On May 3rd, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran asked their followers in an Instagram pool if they wanted new music, with the correct option being "idc". The post was followed up with a countdown of 7 days.[4] The same day Ed Sheeran sung the chorus of the song in a mashup with Love Yourself on his show in Jakarta.[5]

On May 5th, both artists posted videos of the first line of their respective verse on Instagram. Leading up to the release, Warner Music and radio stations posted clips of the vocal mix, teasing the song online.

With the “I Don’t Care” production, says Nava, “I’m not sure how many people would notice, but we shot a lot of those scenes for real, and then some of the shots were stock footage. So when we’re in the swimming pool or the wedding or the dinner or the dance or the tennis court, those are actually real shoots that we filmed, and we were able to thread them into it. … It was quite an intense process actually, because Justin was in Los Angeles and Ed was in Japan, on top of the main shoot with the cast (of extras) and big sets. So we had to do three shoots … I flew to Japan for one day to shoot with Ed and then flew straight back to L.A. to edit for three weeks. The edit was supposed to take shorter than it did, but once we started delving into it, I had to call up the record label and Ed and say, ‘I need a few more days.’ Because it ended up being like Pandora’s box; once we opened it and found things that were working, we wanted to push the concept. I really could have almost been at this for another month.”[6]
