“Intentions” is a song by Justin Bieber featuring Quavo. From his fifth studio album Changes.

In the second episode of the YouTube documentary, Justin Bieber: Seasons, the song title was written down on a note on the board containing candidate tracks for Changes.

Background

“We made the record — the drums and everything stayed the same, but Justin came back to us and said he didn’t like the main identity. We had to go back in, and it was crunch time because he wanted it in an hour or two. We drove back to our boy’s, Trent, house in North Hollywood. We had our speakers set up on his kitchen dining table. We made the melody part of the beat for that song and submitted it as quick as we could. He ended up loving it, and that’s what stayed for what “Intentions” is now.”

After The Audibles submitted the music for “Intentions” on one of their frequent work trips to Los Angeles in 2019, Bieber had concerns. “He was like, ‘This sounds like ‘Ice Cream Truck,’ ” Jordan recalls of Bieber’s initial reaction to the song. “The beat, the melodies — can you change it?’ ”

The Audibles reworked the melodies on their friend Trent’s kitchen table in North Hollywood. The next day they pulled up to the studio to meet Poo and as soon as they played it, he started writing to it immediately. They knew it sounded like a big song and they were happy when Justin said he loved it. Quavo ended up getting on the record last minute, just weeks before the release. It was an unexpected last-minute thing, because the song didn’t have a feature or a spot for it.

When mix engineer Josh Gudwin sent The Audibles a version of it, weren’t happy with the way the drums sounded and the overall mix. They tweaked the drums, then pulled up to Josh and loaded the drums in at his studio days before the album had to be handed in.

When asked why he named this song “Intentions” during MTV Fresh Out, Justin said “I think a lot of us forget to set intentions. As humans we get caught up in our everyday worries and struggles. What we set our intentions on makes a difference on the outcome of our life and the quality of life that we live.”

• Intentions (x2) and Yummy (x2) were the only Multi-Platinum RIAA certified pop singles of 2020.
