Josh Gudwin is a recorder, mixer and producer.
Relationship[]
Gudwin’s relationship with Justin Bieber began in 2010 when he was working with Kuk Harrell on My Worlds Acoustic.[1] At Justin’s request, Josh joined him on the road during the Believe Tour to record Believe Acoustic.[2]
Justin didn’t have the ability to say, ‘I’m just going to cut by myself,’ so he would go in with producers and he would get annoyed when Josh wasn’t there. We’d start sending Josh to sessions with him,” said Allison Kaye, Bieber’s longtime manager.[3]
The second episode of Justin Bieber: Seasons follows Justin in the studio. He opened up about his relationship with his engineer, Josh Gudwin. “Justin’s enabled my whole entire career. About 10 years we’ve been working together,” Josh said while Justin reveals that his “favorite thing about working with Josh is just that I love him as a person. I love to just sit in a room with him and chill. So the fact that I get to hang, listen to tunes, vibe, laugh -- we have a really similar sense of humor.”[4]
“Sometimes, I can tell a song is going to be a hit based on a demo,” Josh said to Variety. “Sometimes it exposes itself after Justin’s voice is on it. Also, Justin is at a point in his career where he understands that he might not necessarily like a song, but once he puts his voice on it, he might see the potential in the song. If I’m pushing it, he’ll try it. It usually shows right away if a song is going to work or not.”[5]
Career[]
2015: Purpose[]
“We began work on the album in late 2013 and worked full-time for more than a year. I kept an overview of the entire project, and managed all the files, contacts and exchanges with the writers and producers. We wrote and recorded in various studios in LA, Atlanta, New York and Toronto — even as far away as Greece — but it was mostly recorded at Record Plant in LA. Justin loves that studio. Though I mixed some songs at Henson Studio D and Jungle City in NY, I mainly mixed at Record Plant. When I’m finalising a product for the best outcome I prefer to be in the same room for a couple of days.
Justin gives me full creative freedom when it comes to mixing his vocals, but if he doesn’t agree, he’ll let me know.
“The workload got so heavy towards the end that I had to bring in someone to help me with the final mixes,” recalled Gudwin. “My buddy Andrew Wuepper, who came up under Dave Pensado, came in for the last one to two weeks, and mixed seven songs with me.”[6]
