Maria is a song that directly talks about the false paternity controversy created by Mariah Yeater. "It's about everything I've gone through," Justin told during the Believe listening party in London. Perhaps to avoid legal issues, the song is called "Maria" without "H".
In an interview with Billboard, Justin said "That's my Billie Jean." Since it takes a concept similar to the hit of Michael Jackson. It also takes Jackson's "Tabloid Junkie" concept, where in the intro we can hear the press commenting on the scandal.
