“STAY” is a song by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber.
Background[]
Kid LAROI told NME: “I was over at my friend Blake’s [Slatkin] house. It was me, Blake, my boy Omer [Fedi] and Charlie Puth. We were all just hanging out, and Charlie went over to the keyboard and just started playing stuff…and what he played was the ‘Stay’ [melody], and I was like, ‘What’s that?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, no, I’m just fucking around.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. Pull up a Pro Tools session, record this shit, this shit’s fire.’ [3] The song was first previewed on LAROI’s Instagram story in September 2020 and the following month in a Rolling Loud-conducted Twitch interview hosted by DJ Scheme. LAROI also performed the song during his Genius Live concert in November 2020.
A few months later [LAROI’s manager] Bibby was like, “We should put the song out and put Justin Bieber on it.” Because this was when LAROI had just started kicking it with Bieber and building that relationship. LAROI was like, “Haan, can you finish this record? Add stuff to it and make it more fleshed out. Haan went to FNZ and worked on the song. The final outcome of the song is just a mix of everyone’s input and versions together.”[1]
“So I actually pulled up to the studio that he works at, and I just came with the fucking file. I was like, ‘You ready?’ and he was like, ‘Yup’. And he just did it. He just went into the booth and just freestyled the shit off top; it was the craziest shit. I was like, ‘Yo, this guy’s out of his mind.'” According to LAROI, Bieber was questioning whether what he was laying down was actually any good. “He’d be like, ‘Yo, do you like this? Is this good?’ And I’d be like, ‘Just keep going. Keep fucking going. Just shut up and keep fucking going.”[4]
In a text conversation screenshot posted by LAROI’s manager Lil Bibby in April 2021, it was revealed that the track is likely to make an appearance on his upcoming project. With LAROI’s continued teasing of the track, it is likely to drop as a single beforehand.[5] A snippet was posted in The Kid LAROI's Discord server.
LAROI posted an Instagram photo with Justin Bieber on June 15, 2021, with the location "STAY"[6], and reposted on his stories with the word "stay?"; a day before, Laroi was seen on a music video set.
Lyrics[]
[Chorus: The Kid LAROI]
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Oh, yeah)
[Verse 1: The Kid LAROI]
I get drunk, wake up, I'm wasted still
I realize the time that I wasted here
I feel like, you can't feel the way I feel
I'll be fucked up, if you can't be right here
[Pre-Chorus: The Kid LAROI]
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
I'll be fucked up, if you can't be right here
[Chorus: The Kid LAROI]
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Hey, hey)
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Hey, hey)
[Verse 2: Justin Bieber]
When I'm away from you I miss your touch (Ooh)
You're the reason I believe in love (Ooh)
It's been difficult for me to trust (Ooh)
And I'm afraid that I'ma fuck it up
Ain't no way that I could leave you stranded
Cause you ain’t never left me empty-handed
And you know that I know that I can't live without you, so baby stay
[Pre-Chorus: Justin Bieber & The Kid LAROI]
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
Oh, ooh-woah (Oh, ooh-woah, ooh-woah)
I'll be fucked up, if you can't be right here
[Chorus: The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber, Both]
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Hey, hey, yeah)
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Hey, hey, yeah)
[Outro: Justin Bieber & The Kid LAROI]
Whoa-oh
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Hey)

[Intro: Justin Bieber]
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh-oh
[Chorus: The Kid LAROI]
I do the same thing I told you that I never would
I told you I'd change, even when I knew I never could
Know that I can't find nobody else as good as you
I need you to stay, need you to stay (Oh, yeah)
[Verse 1: The Kid LAROI]
