Episode: The World's Most Talented Kids.
Introduction
Oprah: This today show is for everybody who ever sung into the mirror pretended that their hairbrush was a microphone and imagine singing on stage to millions, you know who you are. Today you'll see how two young people who had those same dreams made them come true in a big, big way. Four years ago he was just a typical 12-year-old boy until his mom took a little home video and posted that on YouTube and look what happened.
People magazine says 16-year-old Justin Bieber is the biggest pop star on earth, causing mass hysteria wherever he goes. Justin sightings whip up young fans and their moms into a screaming, crying, fainting frenzy.
Born in a small town in Ontario, Canada. He grew up in public housing with his young single mom Pattie. Justin started playing the drums when he was only 2 years old and later picked up the piano, guitar and trumpet. When he was 12, Justin entered a local singing contest and came in second. A few days later his mom posted videos of the event on YouTube which led to more and more YouTube videos.
That's when Bieber Mania began. Millions around the world took notice, including Usher and Justin Timberlake who fought over who would sign the rising new talent.
Usher: His voice had a very unique richness. That was some very organic about his talent. He had confidence, he had a certain ring for soul in his voice and it was all him.
Oprah: Usher introduced Justin to legendary producer L.A. Reid who signed him on the spot.
L.A. Reid: He had the Beatles hair, right. He has the lovability of Michael Jackson. He has the talent of Elvis Presley.
Oprah: Justin seems to be everywhere these days, Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon and at the top of the record chart with his latest album My World 2.0.
Interview
Oprah: Come on out, Justin Bieber! [touches Justin's hair] Love it. Love it, love it. Oh my God. Alright, alright. Can we talk? This is our first time meeting, what a pleasure.
Justin: Oh my gosh, this is pretty amazing.
Oprah: This is pretty amazing to meet you too. I wish just saying to all of your fans here and the rest of the world that you were 12 years old. You were just an ordinary guy singing in your bedroom. Your mom posted on YouTube and now all of this. Have you adjusted?
Justin: Somewhat, it's been pretty crazy coming from like a little town in Canada and now being able to travel and do what I love, it's amazing.
Oprah: Did you dream of this happening to you?
Justin: You know, somewhat I was from like I said before a little town in Canada, just posting videos online just for fun. I never really thought it was possible. So you know, I never really dreamed of it but once it happened…
Oprah: You didn't have a dream of it, so why were you posting the videos online?
Justin: It was just something I loved to do, once I started doing that I realized this is what I was meant to do.
Oprah: So who actually made the call? Did you get a call from Justin Timberlake or from Usher?
Justin: Yeah we were getting calls from a bunch of different like managements, my mom didn't really what was going on.
Oprah: If it was real.
Justin: Exactly. She didn't know if it was real, what is was and finally she got a call from this guy named Scooter and yeah it just went up from there.
Oprah: Pattie, Justin's mom is here. Hi, hi, hi. Pattie,
Pattie: Hi.
Oprah: I can understand if someone named Scooter called you that might cause a little suspicion right? So what did you think?
Pattie: I didn't know what to think, I know that he was really persistent, this is Scooter [points at Scooter sitting next to her]
Oprah: 'Cause you were not taking no for an answer, right Scooter? Absolutely.
Pattie: Yeah.
Oprah: Well tell me this, do you worry about Justin growing up now with all of this?
Pattie: Absolutely, but he's got such a great team of people around like he's got Scooter and that team around us is, they're to protect his character and to treat him like a kid and to make sure he, you know, he has fun, and stays grounded.
Oprah: But also Justin, don't you find that once you become famous and particularly when you're famous and you're paying a lot of people's salaries. Everybody around you tends to say what you want them to say, what they think you want to hear.
Justin Bieber: I do, yeah.
Oprah: Do you worry about who you can trust?
Justin: Yeah, for sure. We're really skeptical who we let in our team and you know, we really have a small team and we're really like. You know we just have fun. We're growing kind of like a family. And you know it's been incredible.
Oprah: And what do you do to keep your kidness?
Justin: My kidness? We try to take off at least one day a week just for me to be a regular kid. Go play basketball, hang out with my friends. Just do what I like to do and sometimes for that day I just sleep all day because the six days before them is exhaustive.
Oprah: And what has been the coolest part for you? What has been the thing that is really surprised you the most? Or made you the happiest about out all of this?
Justin: I got to perform for president Obama. That's probably at the top of the things that I've done.
Oprah: That's pretty cool. And so when you look out your sitting on stage or you're looking out your balcony window and the girls are just like screaming and crying and crying and falling. I heard it Australia recently that, was it Australia?
Justin Bieber: Yeah.
Oprah: That had to shut down, 8 people had to be hospitalized and you had to end the concert. When you look out and you see that, what do you think?
Justin: It's pretty hard to comprehend, like everything is kind of surreal. Like all my fans are really supportive like on Twitter and everything. I'm just really glad that I get to do what I love
Oprah: Do you think, why they are crying and fainting?
Justin: I have no clue. I don't know what it is.
Oprah: You don't know what it is? I think it has something to do with you.
Justin Bieber: Maybe.
Oprah: More with Justin Bieber, we come back. We'll be right back.
Oprah: Every era has its heartthrobs and teen idols, maybe yours was David Cassidy, Donny Osmond or Michael Jackson and for this generation, Baby Baby, his name is Justin Bieber. The oh so charming Justin Bieber is here and I asked my 11-year-old friend Jordan to help me out today. She did such a great job interviewing Taylor Swift last year. We sent her back into the field again for an exclusive interview. So tell us about your report.
Jordan: It was so much fun.
Oprah: I imagine.
Jordan: Justin is such a nice kid.
Oprah: Yes.
Jordan: He is, he is and very kind.
Oprah: And so you're friends or what.
Jordan: My friends are completely obsessed with Justin Bieber. So when I got this assignment I just jumped at the chance to see "Bieber mania" for myself.
Jordan report
Jordan: I flew from my hometown to Buffalo, New York where more than 800 students from the Edward Town Middle School were about to get a private concert from Justin Bieber. Justin's gift to them for winning a school spirit contest that raised more than a $150,000 for charity. These girls from a different school drove hours just to get a peak at Justin. I am on stage where Justin Bieber will be performing. I've heard about Bieber Fever and this crowd has a serious case of it. Listen to them. [fans shouting "Bieber"] They are like, oh my God. It' s like a helicopter loud. I meet Justin for the first time on his wait of the stage.
Justin Bieber: Hi.
Jordan: Hi, I'm Jordan.
Justin Bieber: How are you? I'm Justin, nice to meet you.
Jordan: Nice to meet you too. I know my friends would love to be in my shoes right now. After an amazing performance, it's time for my interview with the most famous teenager on the planet. I have to admit, I'm feeling a little flustered.
Do you ever get nervous before you go on stage and perform?
Justin Bieber: Not anymore because I do it so often. But like I did when I first started.
Jordan: I get nervous too. Are you nervous about meeting Oprah? I'm more excited because it's like, it's gonna be amazing to me. My mom and I used to watch it all the time and I'm just really excited. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
Jordan: She'll love you. She's very nice.
Justin Bieber: Right.
Jordan: What are you most afraid of?
Justin Bieber: The dark.
Jordan: [laughs] Do you have an allowance?
Justin Bieber: I don't really have an allowance. I just like, I don't know, when I wanna get something I just have to ask my mom.
Jordan:: When was the last time you got grounded?
Justin Bieber: A week ago. I got my phone taken away for like 4 days.
Jordan: What's your curfew?
Justin Bieber: I usually have to be home by like 10 o'clock. And like my mom takes my computer away at 10:30 PM every night.
Jordan: Very strict. And that's it.
Justin Bieber: You're really cute. You did a great job interviewing.
Jordan: Thank you.
Justin Bieber: I'm proud.
Interview
Oprah: So when hyou get grounded, what happens? What happens when you get grounded?
Justin Bieber: Well 'cause I'm traveling so much. My mom like takes things like that I really like, like my computer and my phone. Like she takes my phone for a couple days and I'm like "Ah, I need that". I need to talk to…
Oprah: So you don't get to say: mom I can't get grounded, I'm Justin Bieber.
Justin Bieber: [laughs] She'll slap me in the face.
Pattie Mallette: [laughs]
Oprah: Yeah, mommy didn't play that, right.
Pattie Mallette: No.
Oprah: She didn't play that Justin Bieber thing. When word got out that Justin was going to be here, thousands e-mailed us begging us for seats, one was from a 9-year-old Lakaya and she was heartbroken saying that she and her two little sisters were devestated because their dad who is a Captain in the army had promised to take them to take them to a Justin Bieber concert but before he could keep that promise he was deployed to Iraq. So a few days ago we launched "Operation Justin Bieber". They had no idea that their dad was in on our covered mission and here's how that went down. Take a look.
Oprah: So the (?) girls and their mom packed their bags and they headed to Chicago and we arranged for them to do a little sightings so we sent a limo to pick them up with a little surprise inside. Take a look.
Limo scene
Justin Bieber: Hey where you guys wanna go?
Girls: [laughing]
Justin Bieber: You guys hungry? What's so funny? You guys want me to come back there? Alright let's go.
Girl: [hugs Justin]
Justin Bieber: Ah, thank you. Hm, want my shades? They look good on you.
Oprah: Yes girls, that is really Justin Bieber. The biggest popstar in the world sitting there.
Girls & Justin Bieber: [singing Baby]
Oprah: And the top of the rockstar treatment. He's taking you out for icecream.
Justin Bieber: Oh look.
Hershey's: Welcome to Hershey's.
Justin Bieber: Nice, thank you.
Hershey's On a Sunday.
Justin Bieber: We are going to, to my rehearsal. For my rehearsals not really anybody gets to see them but you guys get the special privilege to come and watch. Aight so I have to get warmed but I'mma have someone bringing to the rehearsal spot and I will see you guys in a little bit, alright? I'll let you hold on to those, don't lose them.
Oprah: Now seriously, how many girls in the world can say they had a private concert with Justin Bieber.
Interview
Oprah: Very nice, very nice.
Justin Bieber: Thank you.
Oprah: Good job, very nice. I think that's gonna give you a cool pass at school. I think so, don't you?
Girls: Yes.
Oprah: That was really wonderful, very wonderful. Lakaya, what was the best part for you?
Lakaya: Um, I loved the whole time being with Justin Bieber but I think my favorite part was being in the limo 'cause that's where we did most of our talking an he also sang to us a little bit and that was awesome.
Oprah: So listen, this is the deal, we have one more surprise for the (?) girls. Your dad is joining us on Skype dad from Iraq wheree he's been serving as a critical care nurse in Iraq for 4 months. Hello Captain.
Captain: Hi Oprah.
Oprah: How you doing?
Captain: It's an honor to be here.
Oprah: That's great, let me just tell you. It's so great to have you. Uh really participating your girls live from afar and we as Americans wanna say thank you for serving us so well. You know I know that you had wanted to take them to the concert before you were deployed. But um I think they're liking this experience pretty much.
Captain: Oh, you just made father of the year for the next decade.
Oprah: And Justin you have a message for Captain (?)?
Justin Bieber: Yes, what's going man?
Captain: [laughs] Hey how's it going Justin.
Justin Bieber: How are you, um I just wanted to say. When you get back, we're gonna have 5 tickets waiting for you for you and your family to come to my concert on my tour.
Captain: Oh that is amazing.
Oprah: That is great. Thank you Captain (?) for your service, we hope you're home safe and (?) really soon and thank you (?) daughters. Coming up Justin sings his number one hit, "Baby". We'll be right back.
Oprah: [shows clip of Justin singing to Usher] That was the first time Justin Bieber sang for Usher who's scooped him up and got him a record deal. And he's come along way since then, becoming the youngest male solo artist to have a number one debute album since Stevie Wonder in 1963 so take it away Jordan.
Jordan: Here to sing his biggest hit "Baby", Justin Bieber!

Justin Bieber: [performing "Baby"]

Justin Bieber: Nah, not once.
Oprah: Yes, not once.
Justin Bieber: No.
Oprah: Not once and so Charice doesn't have her license yet but fully supports the cause so both of you I hear are going to sign the pledge, right?
Justin Bieber: Let's do it!
